NZ Symposium of Gastronomy

'Aesthetics'

Food – aesthetics, swirling cave paintings of the beasts from that night's dinner, Trimalchio's feast, gross Roman culinary tricks, medieval banquets with gilded roast peacocks (complete with re-attached tails), Arcimboldo's portraits, people made of food, giant Victorian set pieces, lobsters set in aspic, wedding cakes' sugary symbolism, Davis Gelatine advertisements, bizarre pre-post-modern architectural masterpieces, the pinch of parsley on the greasy spoon fry-up, gold leaf on Indian feasts, sculpted vegetable flowers, beet-dyed Pacifica salads, nouvelle cuisine platters' artistic minimalism … meat handbags.

We have always eaten with our eyes....Food....Aesthetics.

The 2016 Symposium of Gastronomy will explore the way food, art and artifice combine and play with our senses.
